Tariff differentiation between peak and off-peak tariff

There is research needed for choosing the right amount of discount needed to attract enough people to change their behaviour without losing too much income

Choose the right marketing strategy; communicating lower price off peak works better than higher price during peak

Tariffs differ between peak and off-peak tariff; lower tariff can be applied during off-peak hours, to tempt customers to avoid peak hours.

Tariffs differ between peak and off-peak tariff; lower tariff can be applied during off-peak hours, to tempt customers to avoid peak hours.

This leads to less crowded vehicles during peak hours and more customers during off-peak hours, when there is enough space.

This results in several advantages:

  • Less crowded vehicles ensure a more efficient operation as the dwelling time at stops are shorter
  • When enough customers change their behaviour, it is possible to save on the most expensive exploitation hours
  • It gives customers during the peak more comfort and a better travel experience
  • The lower tariff during off-peak hours can attract new customers

Downside is that it can result in some customers, for which off-peak travelling is not an option, choosing other transport modes, like car, bike, etc.
