Adaptable Carriage system

PTE.2
Adaptable Carriage system

It is custom work. The design of the technology depends on the train it is implemented in. There are two options: integrating it in a newly designed train fitting it in an existing model. A key recommendation is that design should be made in collaboration with train companies to fit their demands. Aspects that should be considered are for example cleaning and existing electronics.

There should also be a viable business case as the implementation of the technology bears certain costs. 42 Technology estimated that the costs of a carriage increases by approximately 5-10% if the technology is used. Therefore, it should be investigated if benefits (in terms of yield of freight) are higher than the costs. To investigate this, manufacturers and stores should be included in the process.

If PTAs or PTOs would like to implement the technology they should consider the national safety legislation and organizational structure of PT (contracts, procedures).

Metro/train seating that can be changed easily to cargo space during off-peak hours.

The ‘Adaptable Carriage’ system is a seating system that can be retrofitted into existing carriages or integrated into new build designs to enable train operating companies to flexibly configure specific carriages to carry passengers, bicycles, large items of luggage, or even high-value cargo that would otherwise go by road. This innovation could especially be useful during off-peak hours, to use the space that is left over.
