Recommendations for the design

It is important to involve the stakeholders necessary to have the data you want. If you want data about businesses you will need the chamber of commerce for example. To determine who you need for this, it is necessary to determine what the goal is. If the goal is MaaS, what features do you want to include and what partners do you need for the right data?

Improved energy usage is often a goal in these kinds of projects. However, it is hard to measure results and therefore the focus of such a service should not only be on energy usage.

Also, the data platform can be used for more than planning trips. As an example, data about the driving style of drivers has been collected and analysed. The goal was to detect bad driving behaviours, to create awareness and possibly send them to a course to improve their skills. This data can also be used by insurance.

Recommendations for the implementation

This field of play develops fast and market parties are also working on this (e.g. Google). A lesson from MobiS was that market parties often act faster than governments and therefore the roles of PTAs and PTOs on one side and market parties on the other side should be taken into account (it might be better to collaborate with a market party than to do it all by yourself).

The MobiS platform is open source and could therefore be used. Another option is to use parts of the architecture or to build a platform from scratch. If the existing platform could be used depends on the desired features.

As personal preferences are a part of MobiS, it is important to think about how to attract and commit travellers (as they will have to agree upon that their data will be used to determined their personal preferences).

Brief description

MobiS is a platform that can use different data sources (Wheater, PT, traffic management etc.) and that offers the opportunity to determine personal preferences of travellers and therefore give personal journey advice. It could facilitate MaaS.

Full description

MobiS is a European project aiming at achieving sustainable mobility and energy efficiency through offering an app that guides travellers in choosing the most suitable modes to get from A to B. As such the app facilitates the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS). MaaS was selected as promising innovation too (PTA.1) and could be described as a service that enables travellers to easily choose between the different mobility modes available (and pay for the service). Furthermore, it is a personalised app in that it can be combined with the traveller's diary warning him/her of the need to commence the journey by using mode X, Y, Z.

To do so, MobiS created a new concept and solution of a federated, customized and intelligent mobility platform by applying Internet technologies and Artificial Intelligence methods that will monitor, model and manage the urban mobility complex network of people, objects, natural, social and business environment in real-time. Sources are existing transport service providers, ambient data (based on sensor infrastructures) and social networking data.

MobiS tried the concept in three different locations: Slovenia (personal mobility), Stockholm, Sweden (PT), and Thessaloniki, Greece (traffic management system).
